Below are some projects on which Wageningen UR worked during the last few years:

Algae Pilot Production and Development Centre
The goal of the Pilot Production and Development Centre is to fill the gap between fundamental research on algae and full-scale algae production facilities. This will be done by setting up flexible pilot scale facilities to perform applied research and obtain direct practical experience.

AlgiCoat: Coating Components firing the Economic Biorefinery of Algae
AFSG coordinates this AlgiCoat Project to develop a “whole crop” biorefinery concept for large-scale algal cultures, co-producing poly-unsaturated fatty acids and polyols as raw materials for coating components, oil for fuels and heat / electricity.

Cultivation of microalgae for shellfish
The objective of this project is to find an optimal design for a tubular PBR in which a shear sensitive species like Chaetoceros muelleri can be produced.

Carbon dioxide supply in photobioreactors
The  aim  of  this  research  project  is  the  development  of  an  energy efficient and economically feasible process for carbon dioxide transfer in the production of microalgae rich in lipids.

Effect of oxygen on algae

For optimal design of closed photobioreactors for growth and production of Nannochloropsis sp., we need to reveal the effects of oxygen on growth and productivity of Nannochloropsis sp. and study the effects of the formation of photo-oxygenated products.

Harnessing the sun for microalgae cultures
The aim of this project is to maximize the photosynthetic efficiency of the growing microalgae in a new photobioreactor prototype in which outdoor sunlight conditions will be simulated.

High density cultures of microalgae
Our goal is to determine what causes the growth inhibition in high-density cultures of Monodus subterraneus.

Harvesting of algae for oil extraction
In commercial algae production harvesting is generally done by centrifugation. However, the costs and energy demands for harvesting the algal biomass by these methods are high.

Sustainable post-treatment of municipal wastewater with algae
The goal of this project is to develop an algal photo-biofilm system for the post-treatment of municipal wastewater. This reactor is primarily aimed to remove residual nitrogen and phosphorus in the wastewater.

Feasibility for Energy
For Delta, an energy companies in the Netherlands, we performed a feasibility study on the production of microalgae, in which 3 production technologies were compared: open pond , horizontal tubular photobioreactor and a flat panel photobioreactor.

Oxygen production in photobioreactors: a biological approach
The aim of this project is the development of an energy efficient, economically feasible process for oxygen removal.

Milking of carotenoids from Dunaliella
The aim of this research project is to gain insight in the extraction procedure. This is of importance for the optimisation of the milking process.

Green Solar Collector
This project focuses on designing a reactor and process for the efficient conversion of sunlight into biomass.

Development of high efficiency photobioreactors
This green halo tolerant alga has the capacity of accumulating large amounts of carotenoids. In Dunaliella salina carotenoid accumulation is highest under stress conditions, when growth is limited. Consequently, maximization of biomass productivity in photobioreactors is important.

Metabolomics of caretenoid synthesis
The aim of this project is to use metabolic profiling strategies to create a better understanding of the effects of physiological conditions on the carotenoid metabolism in Dunaliella salina. Ideally, this will generate leads for maximization of carotenoid production in this alga.
